CHAPTER 12

SIBLINGS FACE THE ANCESTORS

Once they arrived in the Skeleton Death Lands, it was no picnic. The grayish-black sky poured over the dark hillside. Bones and cacti caught the attention of Gabby's crew.

“These cacti must have water in them, right?” asked Mr. Patterson.

“Oh no, dear, not these—they are poison,” said Goddess Blalock. She demonstrated by tearing a piece off a blackened limb. It leaked a black slime.

“Gross,” Gabby and everyone said all at once.

“Smells worse than Pat's omelets!” Ronnie laughed.

The heat came down harder. Gabby and her crew had come upon an area of skeleton bones and darkened tumbleweeds.

“Be careful where you step,” Samulet warned.

“Correct, Your Majesty. Everyone, remember your hearing tactics, and stay silent. Listen for the first two ticks. The crystal bombs go off in a half of a second,” said Jinco.

INU delicately tiptoed his huge paws across the ground. His nose radar sensed trouble. INU put his huge, floppy ear to the ground. He leaped behind Gabby and snatched her from behind by her purple V-neck shirt. He pulled her back before she took another step. The ground exploded with a blast of hot, grainy smoke. Purple crystals flew upward from the ground. They sprayed a gasoline-smelling smoke from the center of the sharp-edged crystal core. The dirt flew in a whirlwind in all directions.

“Everyone, get down, and cover your faces. Inhaling the smoke will burn you. Avoid the crystals!” yelled Samulet. He started quickly tearing his cloak into pieces. He began levitating the pieces of cloth from his cloak. Samulet then used his telekinesis to wrap the others’ faces to protect them from the gasoline smoke. It poured from the crystals. Reaching his palm out, he also attempted to control the movement of the crystals with his telekinetic powers. The source was too strong. He eliminated some of them, but more crystals just kept coming out of the ground. Samulet could feel the smoke burning his skin. A scuffed hand slid underneath Samulet's neck. He was squatting down like everyone else. Their faces were covered.

Samulet was using his arm and hands to cover his face. He had run out of cloth from his cloak. His eyes were closed. The smoke grew higher. He felt hands tying the blue cloth behind his ears.

“You gave me too much,” said Ronnie. He put his fist up and helped Samulet make a fist as their eyes watered from the smoke. They fist-bumped. “Team,” said Ronnie.

“Team,” said Samulet.

Everyone huddled under INU's furry body. Gabby used her lightning bubble force field. It kept the underground poison crystals from burning their skin.

After the smoke finally cleared, Gabby collapsed her force field. She shattered the crystals with her ropes of lightning that bled from her katana. She swung to the left and to the right with elegance, splitting them into tiny specks of glass. Her katana rattled.

“Go, woman warrior!” yelled Goddess Blalock. Gabby's katana attracted all the broken crystals like a magnet.

“The power of the purple night! She's the warrior of the night, defeating the most sinister enemies.
